Antique Appraisals at Antique Trove April 9

Antique Appraisals at Antique Trove April 9

Antique Trove in Roseville hosted antique appraisals on April 9, 2015. These appraisal events gave collectors and flea market shoppers a chance to find out what their pieces were actually worth.

Antique Trove Roseville is one of Northern California’s largest antique malls, with over 100 dealer booths spread across a massive retail space on Douglas Boulevard. The store hosts appraisal events periodically, bringing in certified appraisers who evaluate items on the spot.

If you have never attended an antique appraisal event, here is what to know:

  • Bring your item, not just a photo. Appraisers need to examine the piece in person. They check construction methods, materials, marks, and condition. A photo misses half the details that determine value.
  • Know the difference between appraisal types. A verbal appraisal at an event like this gives you a ballpark value for insurance or resale purposes. A written appraisal, which costs more and takes longer, is what you need for estate settlements or insurance claims.
  • Manage expectations. Most items people bring to appraisal events are worth $20-100. The occasional piece worth $500+ makes for a great story, but realistic expectations lead to a better experience.
  • Ask questions. Appraisers are happy to explain what makes a piece valuable or not. The education alone is worth the trip, especially if you shop flea markets regularly and want to sharpen your eye for quality.

Flea market finds are some of the best candidates for appraisal events. That $15 piece of pottery you picked up at Folsom Blvd might be a $200 McCoy vase, or it might be a $5 reproduction. Either way, you learn something.
